About Millstream-Chichester National Park

Millstream-Chichester National Park is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, approximately 115 km northwest of Newman. The park covers an expansive area of arid landscapes contrasting with permanent water pools in the Millstream Creek, part of the Fortescue River system. The park is divided into two distinct sections: the Millstream area, known for its rich vegetation and wetlands sustained by permanent springs, and the Chichester Range, featuring rugged hills and rocky escarpments. Vegetation includes eucalypt woodlands, spinifex grasses, and unique riparian plants along watercourses. Wildlife is abundant and includes species such as rock wallabies, emus, and an array of birdlife, including wedge-tailed eagles and rare honeyeaters. The park protects significant cultural sites of the local Yindjibarndi and Ngarluma peoples, whose connection to the land is reflected in rock art and traditional stories. Recreation opportunities include camping, hiking, bird watching, and swimming in natural pools formed by Millstream Springs. Rock climbing and scenic drives through Chichester Range add to the visitor appeal. The park's combination of water, wildlife, and red earth presents vibrant contrasts not typically found in Western Australia's arid interior. Visitors are drawn by both its natural beauty and cultural significance. Camping facilities at Millstream provide access to swimming spots and trails, allowing visitors to experience both relaxing and adventurous sides of the park. The park is managed for conservation while accommodating visitors seeking solitude, wildlife encounters, and outdoor activity in a remote but accessible environment.
